Artist Statement: The concept of my senior exhibition circulates around emotions associated with the senior ex, but it primarily emphasizes feelings of isolation and emptiness. The reason behind emphasizing those two emotions is because I feel that’s how many human beings actually feel whether they are aware of it or not. No one has a person that is literally with them every single day, who can read your thoughts, feel the exact same emotion at the level you feel it at, or understand the reason behind the actions when sometimes you don’t even know the answer to it; especially since the Senior Ex is an individual project. And for that, is the reason behind highlighting those two emotions. I’ve conveyed them in a multitude of different ways, like including galaxies, spacing objects out, or having one person on their own, etc. Based on those two emotions, I lean more on using dark, cool colors to make it feel emptier. The artist who has inspired me the most is John Casey, whose art is grotesque and cynical. His art has somewhat the same primary concept as well. Not only that, John uses a lot of fine lines as a way to shade which adds detail and I greatly appreciate the way he interprets it. The way I’m presenting my art is to place the pieces by which I feel the emotions the most and go on from there; in sort of like a pyramid. In the front of my board will be a ceramic shark, and around the board and shark it will have these spider type things with human heads to represent people that “get under your skin”.
